Room to Run at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Park

The stunning new cruise terminal on the site of the old Kai Tak airport has more to offer than just a boarding point for cruise ships.

Located at the tip of the old runway, the Foster and Partners designed space is the new regional hub for cruise liners, but you don’t need to be a cruise passenger to enjoy the huge landscaped rooftop.  If you are looking for somewhere to get the kids out and burning off some excess energy or to enjoy a picnic and soak up the views across Victoria Harbour, then it’s definitely worth a visit.

The rooftop space is huge – 23,000 square feet to be precise, and while the kids run about, you can either sit back and relax on the (real!) grass or enjoy the unique vista across both the Island and Kowloon.  For the warmer months, there are also some fun water squirters to help the kids cool off.

Let’s not forget that this was the site of the old airport and for anyone that’s seen those terrifying YouTube clips of planes coming in almost scraping the rooftops of Kowloon City, you have the opportunity to see just how precarious it must have felt for pilots landing in HK only a few decades ago.  On the ground floor level of the terminal building is a series of fascinating photos chronicling the airport through the ages – certainly a talking point if you take small children or visitors.

If you are feeling peckish then there are a few options available. If the huge dim sum restaurant complete with giant cinema screen broadcasting cantopop isn’t your cup of tea, then we can recommend The Old Hangar. Serving modern British food in a cool industrial/vintage chic space with high ceilings, the restaurant offers brunch, lunch and dinner. They have high chairs but at the time of publication, no kids menu.  There are a couple of other options including a coffee shop in the ferry terminal if you just want to stop for a quick refuel.
