Hong Kong’s mandatory seat belt rule for bus passengers is set to be repealed after a wave of complaints days after it began. The requirement took effect on 25 January 2026, making passengers on buses fitted with seat belts buckle up or risk a fine of up to HK$5,000.
Some commuters reported discomfort and difficulties moving to the door or pressing stop buttons. Others questioned hygiene, saying belts are handled by many people each day. There were also concerns about inconsistent equipment, with some buses lacking usable belts, and about children using adult-sized restraints.
Transport and Logistics Secretary Mable Chan met the press on 30 January and said the government would repeal the rule as soon as possible, while reviewing how best to improve road safety on public transport.
