Hong Kong’s largest new public hospital, Kai Tak Hospital, will begin operations in phases from October 2026, the Hospital Authority announced on April 10.

The acute hospital sits in the Kai Tak Development Area and will serve Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong, covering more than 1.8 million people. Once fully operational, it will provide 2,400 beds and a gross floor area of about 500,000 square metres, making it the city’s biggest public healthcare hub by capacity. Services will be moved in stages from Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The first phase is set for October 2026, when the Specialist Out-patient Clinic Block and the Oncology Block are due to open. Initial services will include the Family Medicine Integrated Centre and specialist outpatient clinics in medicine, surgery, neurosurgery, family medicine and oncology for existing patients.

Allied health services will start at the same time, along with diagnostic and interventional radiology and other supporting clinical services. The Hospital Authority said the second phase is expected to bring inpatient care, surgical services and Accident and Emergency services in 2028, aiming for a smooth transition.

Kai Tak Hospital comprises five towers and is planned to include 37 operating theatres. It will house specialist centres such as an oncology centre and a neuroscience centre for complex referrals.

The Hospital Authority also said the hospital will be a designated trauma centre and will be the first public hospital in Hong Kong equipped with a cyclotron to produce radioactive tracers for diagnostic examinations and cancer care. The site is also intended to provide clinical support to the nearby Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.
