Hong Kong-based Mandarin Oriental was voted the top luxury hotel brand in the world, according to the 2023 edition of the LTI – Luxury Travel Intelligence rankings. Two other SAR brands also made it to the list: Rosewood (No. 10) and The Peninsula (No. 12).
There is an overall improvement of Hong Kong representation in the rankings. Mandarin Oriental moved up one position from last year because it is an “engaging brand with a loyal and growing following, who appreciate its commitment to excellence.” The Peninsula made an appearance in the list for the first time for “demonstrating [its] commitment to delivering the best in global luxury hospitality.”

While Rosewood dropped seven places this year, another SAR-based brand — Shangri-La — rated “sufficiently to be monitored throughout the year”, along with international brands like Ritz-Carlton, Park Hyatt, and Oberoi.
The LTI list is arrived at by using 130 touch points relevant to the luxury hotel sector, which impact a brand’s ability to deliver: its passion, commitment, ethos and values, as well as the quality of its management and staff. Each has its own weighted score value with a total maximum accumulative score of 4663, and the final scores are represented as percentages. In addition, a brand must have at least 10 properties to be eligible for consideration.
It’s been a big year for Hong Kong hospitality, with several of the city’s hotels appearing high in various international rankings. The Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong made it to the prestigious La Liste rankings of the world’s 1,000 best hotels for 2023, along with Rosewood Hong Kong, The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, and The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, as well as 11 other SAR properties.
Rosewood Hong Kong and The Upper House were also featured in the first World’s 50 Best Hotels List, while The Peninsula Hong Kong received two other honours this year: Asia’s Leading Heritage Hotel at the World Travel Awards and the No. 6 spot in the Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Choice Awards.
