Five days before his first concert at Kai Tak Stadium, a small detail in The Weeknd’s Instagram Stories caught our attention. In a night-time view of Victoria Harbour, a laptop sat beside the window, its screen appearing to show music-production software. Was he working on something during his stay?

On Saturday 24 October, that question became even more interesting when the Canadian superstar surprised concertgoers with an unreleased song dedicated to Hong Kong.

The Surprise At Kai Tak Stadium

The singer reportedly told the crowd how much he loved Hong Kong and that he had prepared a special gift for them. As the title Hong Kong appeared across the stadium’s giant screens, he introduced a song that had never been performed publicly before.

Then came a voice familiar to generations of Cantopop listeners: Faye Wong (王菲). The new track samples her 1993 Cantonese song 季候風 (Seasonal Wind), blending her vocals with The Weeknd’s R&B sound.

The song was accompanied by a music video filmed in Hong Kong, featuring night-time city scenes and visuals reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai’s films. The footage played across the stadium’s large screen during the performance.

Were There Clues In His Instagram Stories?

The Weeknd had already shown his interest in Faye Wong before arriving in Hong Kong. In late September, he shared her 1996 album 浮躁 (Fuzao) on social media.

During his stay, he met Tony Leung and Carina Lau at a private Cartier dinner, then posted a photograph with Leung accompanied by Wong’s 夢中人 (Dream Lover), featured in the 1994 film Chungking Express.

A few days later, his Instagram Stories raised another question. Alongside a night-time view of Victoria Harbour, his alternate account @gene.hackerman showed a laptop displaying what appeared to be music-production software.

Those posts now seem particularly interesting following the surprise debut of Hong Kong at Kai Tak Stadium.

The performance features Faye Wong’s original vocals, sampled from Seasonal Wind, rather than a newly announced collaboration between the two artists. Watch the song and its Hong Kong-themed music video below.

The Weeknd’s ‘Hong Kong’ Lyrics Tell A Story Of Lost Love

The lyrics of Hong Kong tell the story of a brief romance that ends in separation. The song moves between The Weeknd’s English verses and the Cantonese chorus of Faye Wong’s Seasonal Wind, with Hong Kong becoming the place where the singer hopes the two might meet again.

[Verse 1: The Weeknd]
There was something in the air
I knew that in that moment I would burn the world to keep you warm
But my life won't let me stay
So if we never speak again
At least we still have Seoul
And only God could separate us
On my skin, you left your mark the night
You held me close
And in the morning, we turned to strangers
But don't you hesitate to call
I'm posted in Hong Kong

[Chorus: 王菲]
那次季候風 吹得那樣空
彷彿世上一切 也將消失所蹤
你似季候風 抵擋計劃全也無用
然後是場空 加上不死的心痛

[Verse 2: The Weeknd]
Still remember when we met
We barely knew each other, but that tension never left
Now you're sleeping in my bed
A thing that never started already comes to an end
And I know God would separate us
Any time it felt this good, it ends in tragic song
I'm so used to weathering changes
So if you ever change your mind
I'm waiting in Hong Kong

[Chorus: 王菲]
那次季候風 吹得那樣空
彷彿世上一切 也將消失所蹤
你似季候風 抵擋計劃全也無用
然後是場空 加上不死的心痛

The Weeknd has three more concerts at Kai Tak Stadium on 25, 30 and 31 October 2026 as part of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour. For more upcoming live performances, check out our guide to the best concerts and music festivals in Hong Kong.
