Hong Kong has approved a new public transport link for Kai Tak after the Chief Executive in Council authorised the railway scheme on 31 March 2026.

The project is planned as a 3.5-kilometre route with six stations, connecting Kai Tak Cruise Terminal with MTR Kai Tak Station, with stops at Kai Tak Station Square, Kai Tak Sports Park, Shing Fung Road Park, and Kai Tak Sky Garden, plus a station at Shing King Street.

Planned as a Smart and Green Mass Transit System, the new Kai Tak service is meant to be a dedicated, local transit link rather than a standard bus route. It is expected to run on its own corridor, with stations along the way, so passengers can travel through the district without relying on general road traffic. In simple terms, it will work like a district shuttle that brings people between key Kai Tak sites and the MTR more directly.

The Government says the line will act as a local feeder service for the former runway area, helping residents and visitors travel between new housing, commercial sites and key destinations.

It is intended to improve access to tourism areas, cultural and recreation spaces, sports venues and community facilities across Kai Tak, where many places are currently a longer walk from the MTR. The system is currently targeted to be commissioned in 2031.

The Hong Kong government is continuing to develop new public transport options across the city, as this project follows the announcement on the South Island Line (West), in December 2025, which would extend rail coverage on Hong Kong Island.

The Government has invited MTR Corporation to begin detailed planning and design for the 7.5km South Island Line (West) between Wong Chuk Hang and HKU, serving eight stations including Aberdeen, Wah Fu, Cyberport and Queen Mary Hospital. Construction is targeted to start in 2027, with completion by 2034.
