Many parents turn to maths tutors when their children need extra support ahead of exams or a change of school. But finding the right tutor means more than choosing someone who knows the syllabus — you also want someone who understands how your child learns.

Independent Hong Kong maths tutor Vic Li has taught mathematics for over 17 years, working with international school students locally and in the UK, US, Australia and Canada. He holds a BSc in Mathematics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Master of Financial Mathematics from The University of Queensland.

With expertise in IBDP, IGCSE, A-Levels and SAT, Li helps each student identify gaps in their understanding and find their own way to strengthen their maths skills ahead of exams.

Why International School Students May Need Extra Maths Support

Strong maths foundations help students tackle increasingly challenging topics (Vic Li)

As students reach their senior secondary years, maths becomes considerably more demanding. Advanced courses such as A-Level Mathematics and IB Mathematics Higher Level introduce complex topics like calculus on top of concepts learned in earlier years.

IB Diploma students must complete the Mathematics Internal Assessment (IA), an individual mathematical exploration worth 20% of their final maths grade. Selecting a suitable topic, applying mathematical concepts and clearly explaining their findings can be challenging, particularly for students unfamiliar with this type of project.

If your child changes schools or education systems, they may find gaps in their maths knowledge because different curricula do not always cover topics in the same order.

Those preparing to enter British or American boarding schools can face additional entrance assessments such as Common Entrance, UKiset and SSAT. These tests may require problem-solving techniques or question formats that students have not encountered in their regular lessons.

Personalised Maths Tutoring for Different Curricula and Exams

From IBDP, IGCSE/GCSE, A-Levels, SAT, AP to boarding school entrance exams, Li tailors interactive lessons to each student’s needs. He provides comprehensive learning materials, including textbooks, topic notes, practice exercises, and past papers.

Support also continues outside lessons, with students able to ask questions via WhatsApp or email, while monthly reports help parents track their child’s progress.

Boarding School Entrance Exams: UKiset, Common Entrance and SSAT

If your child is applying to a UK or US independent or boarding school, Li also offers preparation for UKiset, Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+, and SSAT.

These tests can feel unfamiliar even to capable maths students. Sessions build familiarity with the question formats, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and introduce timed practice.

For UKiset, tutoring covers non-verbal reasoning, including identifying patterns and interpreting visual information.

In addition to exam preparation, Li works with overseas admissions consultants to support students applying to leading international schools abroad.

IB, IGCSE, GCSE and A-Level Mathematics

For IB students, Li covers Mathematics AA and AI at Higher and Standard Level, plus IB MYP. He teaches IGCSE, GCSE, A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Lessons address syllabus-specific topics and exam formats, helping students work through questions and present their answers clearly.

For IB Diploma students, lessons can include guidance on their Mathematics Internal Assessment, including developing ideas and explaining their mathematical approach.

SAT, ACT, AP and University Mathematics

Li offers SAT Mathematics preparation and ACT Mathematics tutoring, with an emphasis on accuracy, timing, and question-solving strategies. He supports AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Statistics as well.

University students can get help with calculus, linear algebra, probability, and other advanced mathematical subjects.
