We’re not sure there’s a better way to wind down on a weeknight than digging in the back of your brain for the name of the tyrannical head teacher from Roald Dahl’s Matilda with a pint in hand. For some low-stakes fun testing your general knowledge with a group of friends, check out these pub quizzes in Hong Kong. Most of them are centred in the home of British pubs – Wan Chai – but there may be some even regular quizzers haven’t heard of.
GRAIN — Kennedy Town
We mentioned testing your knowledge on a little bit of everything with a pint at the beginning… and there’s no better place to do it than K-Town’s favourite gastropub. Every other Tuesday (quizzing starts promptly at 8pm; arrive for registration at 7:30pm), not only do the top three teams win prizes of cases of Gweilo craft beer and dining vouchers, but stand-out individuals also win prizes! The White Stag — Wan Chai
Opening in 1999 as the self-proclaimed “first open-front bar” in Wan Chai, The White Stag is well-liked for its daily live rugby, football, and Grand Prix and home-cooked comfort British pub fare. Quiz nights have been a regular fixture for almost as long as the pub has been open. Every Sunday and Monday at 7:30pm, teams can settle into the booths and test their memory of random facts about war history, sports, films, and music.

Delaney’s — Wan Chai
Step into one of the most authentic Irish pubs in Hong Kong when you enter the basement of the Wharney Guangdong Hotel. Every Wednesday night at 7pm, join them for their well-loved trivia night. When the pandemic hit, Quiz Master Mark started running Remote Pub Quiz Asia as a social distancing-friendly Zoom quiz night. Since rules have loosened, they’ve moved to various venues around Hong Kong with teams competing over twelve-week seasons to win the grand prize of a beer keg valued at HK$7,000 (the top three teams of the night win craft beer, shots, and merch!). Another longstanding British-style pub on Lockhart Road, The Queen Victoria holds quiz nights on Monday nights from 8:30pm to 10:45pm. Millennial Quiz Night — Central
Those of us who have watched all 10 seasons of Friends more than once, grew up on Harry Potter, and read John Green as the epitome of fine literature will love Millennial Quiz Night, where no question relates to a pop culture topic pre-1981. The trivia event moves around, collaborating with various bars – the Aftermath is their primary home, but they sometimes do quizzes at SipSip and The Pontiac. Every Thursday at British pub Churchill’s from 8:30pm, there is a no-holds-barred pub quiz. All participants are winners, with free-for-alls like complimentary shooters, but grand prizes include drinks, meals, and Churchill’s merch on the house. Misty’s weekly pub quiz night is on Tuesdays at 7:30pm. A popular destination for live sports and happy hour until 10pm, throw back HH drinks while testing your knowledge of miscellaneous topics like literature, geography, and famous people. Teams go up to four each and there are prizes like bar credits up for grabs by the top three performing teams. Call them to register!
