Renaud Capuçon is one of France’s most celebrated violinists, and he will take the stage at Hong Kong City Hall on October 11, joined by his regular chamber music partner, pianist Guillaume Bellom.

The performance is part of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s Great Music 2026 series, which bring world-renowned musicians to Hong Kong from June to December this year.

Capuçon will return to Hong Kong for the first time in nearly a decade, following his 2017 performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (Universal Music)

Born in Chambéry in 1976, Capuçon entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris at just 14, later studying in Berlin with Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern. In 1997, Claudio Abbado invited him to become concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.

Since then, he has performed with orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker and New York Philharmonic, and has also represented France at several major international occasions. He performed alongside Yo-Yo Ma at an Armistice Day ceremony beneath the Arc de Triomphe and later appeared with his brother Gautier Capuçon at the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

For this Hong Kong performance, audiences may also get to see Capuçon play his 1737 Guarneri del Gesù “Panette”, a historic violin that once belonged to Isaac Stern.

One Night of Brahms

On October 11, Capuçon and Bellom will perform the composer’s complete set of three violin sonatas: No. 1 in G major, Op. 78; No. 2 in A major, Op. 100; and No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108.

Bellom, a French pianist who won First Prize at the Épinal International Competition in 2015, will bring his own pedigree to the evening.

Before the concert, audiences can also join a free pre-concert talk, where violist, conductor and music educator Johnny Ng will explore Brahms’ darker sound world. The one-hour talk in Cantonese is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
