The world-renowned Cirque du Soleil is bringing its Kooza show back to Hong Kong this year as part of its 2025 Asia tour. The circus production will stage 15 performances at The Big Top at Central Harbourfront from May 21-June 1, 2025.
This is the first time that Cirque du Soleil Kooza will be in the city since 2018, and Hong Kong audiences will get to see a revamped version of the presentation — complete with new artists and production elements.
What is ‘Cirque du Soleil Kooza’?
Cirque du Soleil Kooza tells the story of The Innocent, a loner who embarks on a journey and meets a cast of colourful characters — such as the King, the Trickster, and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog — along the way. The production is a showcase of two circus traditions: acrobatic performance and the art of clowning presented by specialists who display a wide array of skills. Kooza was relaunched in 2022, so spectators this year will get to see and interact with new artists.
The forthcoming Hong Kong showings of Cirque du Soleil Kooza will be the first in a series of Asia events that the production has lined up for 2025. There will be 15 shows staged over 10 days — from May 21-June 1, 2025 — each of which will be about 125-minutes long, with a 25-minute intermission. Audiences can watch the performances at The Big Top, which is also where The World Circus takes place during the AIA Carnival.
What to expect from the performers?
The entertainers at the Hong Kong shows come from 54 countries across the world, which includes six musicians and two singers. Spectators can watch a rotation acts specialist, a contortionist, unicycle duo, teeterboard artists, and high-wire performers flaunt their skills to live music and singing.
Audiences can also get a front-row seat to an enthralling performance in which an entertainer balances on a 23-feet-high tower of chairs. The highlight The Wheel of Death — a large high-speed rotating powered by two performers who run hamster-style inside two diagonal wheels.
The set and the costumes of Cirque du Soleil Kooza are characters in their own right. In all, there are more than 175 costumes and 160 hats, and the circular stage reminiscent of a public square transforms into a circus ring. The centrepiece of the stage is a travelling tower called the Bataclan, which changes the layout of the performance space as it moves.
