Hong Kong photographer Chi Ho Gary Ng has reached another career milestone, taking the top honour at the Architecture Photography Awards 2026 and becoming the first Hongkonger to be named Photographer of the Year.
The recognition comes after Ng made history at the same competition in 2025, when he became the first Hong Kong photographer to win two categories. His winning streak has continued this year, including being named Architecture Photography Category Winner of the Year at the 2026 London Photography Awards for Spiral in Moonlight.
Finding Order In Architecture
Ng’s work has a recognisable visual language built around geometry, repetition, symmetry and scale. Buildings are not simply documented as places; their façades, windows, staircases and structural details become patterns that can almost feel abstract.
One image turns a dense residential façade into a seemingly endless grid of balconies and blue-tinted windows. In another, hundreds of circular openings across a pale wall create a graphic backdrop for a lone pedestrian carrying an umbrella.
That human element appears repeatedly in his photography. A single figure standing beside a waterfront building, walking up an imposing concrete staircase or positioned at the end of a dramatic interior gives viewers an immediate sense of just how large the architecture around them really is.
It also stops the images from becoming purely geometric studies. There is often a small moment of everyday life hidden within the symmetry.
Ng has previously explained that he enjoys photographing architectural geometry for the structure and order it reveals, while adding people can give an image greater storytelling value.
This is the second international recognition for a Hong Kong photographer this week, following Hong Kong-based photographer Derry Ainsworth’s win as Architecture Photographer of the Year 2026, at the European Photography Awards.
