The government confirmed that the New Year’s Eve fireworks scheduled for December 31, 2025, at Victoria Harbour will not go ahead.

Alternative celebrations will be arranged and announced by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), including a new countdown event at Chater Road Pedestrian Zone in Central.

The decision follows the Tai Po fire on 26 November, a tragedy that claimed 160 lives and had a profound impact on the community. In response, several public events across the city have been adjusted as Hong Kong observes a period of reflection and respect.

Instead of harbour fireworks, Hong Kong’s New Year celebrations will centre on a live countdown in Central, supported by light shows and parallel countdown events across the city.
