Hong Kong’s temperatures will drop further than previously predicted, with minimum temperatures set to fall to 9 degrees Celsius in the city’s urban areas next week. The Hong Kong Observatory revised its previous forecast for the coming week, and now expects temperatures to hover between 9 degrees and 13 degrees on Tuesday, January 23 and Wednesday, 24, as the result of an “intense winter monsoon and upper-air disturbance”.

While the mercury will fall to 9 degrees in most urban parts of the city, it could get as low as 5 degrees in Ta Kwu Ling in the northern New Territories. There will likely be cold weather warnings in place during this time, as the Hong Kong Observatory typically issues them when temperatures drop to 12 degrees. Temperatures will gradually increase later in the week, with expected lows of 14 degrees.

However, in the run-up to next week’s cold snap, temperatures will rise to highs of between 24 degrees and 26 degrees during the weekend, due to an “easterly airstream affecting the coast of Guangdong”. Temperatures will begin to dip on Sunday, January 21 and drop further on Monday, January 22. The observatory also expects the weather to be cloudy with a few rain patches in the middle of next week.
