Mahjong is probably one of Hong Kong’s most familiar cultural symbols, tied to family gatherings, festive traditions, neighbourhood life and Cantonese pop culture. This May, the game’s visual language will move from the table to the street as Hong Kong’s first mahjong street art exhibition arrives on Shin Hing Street.

Running from May 29 to 31, the exhibition is created by Mr. Mahjong, a Hong Kong artist known for reimagining mahjong through contemporary design. More than 15 artworks will be displayed across the neighbourhood, using over 100 custom-designed mahjong tiles inspired by the themes of “Shin” 善 and “Hing” 慶, meaning kindness and celebration.

The project comes at a time when Hong Kong’s traditional mahjong culture is facing growing pressure. Many long-standing mahjong shops have closed in recent years, while hand-carved tile making has become increasingly rare.

In this context, the exhibition offers a way to shed light on a historic piece of Hong Kong culture through new lenses, presenting mahjong not only as a game, but also as a design language, an art form and a marker of local identity.

Visitors will be able to explore Shin Hing Street and discover installations placed across different corners of the neighbourhood. Several local venues are part of the exhibition, including bars, cafés, restaurants and wine shops, with each artwork designed to reflect the personality of its location.

Mr. Mahjong’s work often blends traditional tile aesthetics with references to Cantonese language, film, music, food culture and local festivals. His past collaborations include projects with Hang Seng Bank, GUCCI, Van Cleef & Arpels, Red Bull and Yohji Yamamoto, as well as appearances on local television and in cultural venues.
