Chinese New Year is one of the busiest times in Hong Kong. With this in mind, the MTR will boost its train services from January 24-February 4, 2025 to cope with the expected increase in passenger traffic during this time. The enhancements include overnight services on Lunar New Year’s Eve and more than 1,600 extra trips during the holiday season to allow passengers to head to events like the fireworks show at Victoria Harbour. Â
Overnight Services on Lunar New Year’s Eve
The railway giant will provide overnight services on January 28 on most of its domestic railway lines, except for journeys to and from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau on the East Rail Line, and trips on the Airport Express and the Disneyland Resort Line. Passengers can expect peak service frequencies starting as early as 3pm on eight railway lines. Key lines such as the Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line, and Kwun Tong Line will have trains running approximately every two minutes during rush hours. Light Rail routes and specific MTR bus services will extend their operating hours to make travelling at night more convenient for commuters.
Additional Rides for the Holiday Season
The MTR has also planned increased train frequencies on several lines to accommodate holiday travellers and event attendees between January 24 and February 4. For the fireworks display on January 30, train services on seven major lines, including the Kwun Tong and Tsuen Wan Lines, will operate more often. The Airport Express will adjust its schedule for peak travel, with early departures on Lunar New Year’s Day and extended hours from January 31 to February 2. Passengers are encouraged to check train schedules on the MTR Mobile app or website to familiarise themselves with the new schedules and allow extra time during busy periods.
