Hongkongers will get a respite from the recent warm weather, as an upper-air disturbance and a southward-moving cold front brings rainy and cold weather to the city this week. The territory’s local weather forecaster expects “the first relatively significant rainfall episode of this year” on Tuesday morning, followed by cooler temperatures over the next few days.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicts cloudy conditions and isolated thunderstorms on Tuesday, which will bring low visibility to the city. The rain is expected to ease off by Wednesday, when the weather should start to cool down. It will be cloudy during the rest of the week, but the skies are set to brighten over the weekend. The mercury is forecast to fall to 13 degrees Celsius on Friday morning, but is likely to rise progressively over the course of the following week. During this time, humidity levels will be in the 70%-90% range.

Last week, thick blankets of fog enveloped Hong Kong’s iconic skyline as humidity levels soared to almost 100% and temperatures to a high of 27 degrees at the observatory’s headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui on Sunday — all thanks to a humid maritime airstream. The weekend was damp and warm, and visibility dropped to 100 metres or less in certain parts of the city. This is fairly typical at this time of year in Hong Kong, which usually experiences fog between February and April.
