Five Hong Kong universities are among the top 20 tertiary institutes in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings for 2023.

The University of Hong Kong (No. 4), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (No. 6), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (No. 7), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (No. 14), and City University (No. 16) are included in the 11th edition of the list announced on Thursday.

Hong Kong Universities in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings for 2023

Apart from the University of Hong Kong, which maintained its No. 4 position for the fifth year in a row, all the other Top 20 institutes improved on their 2022 rankings. City University entered the top 20, but Baptist University fell out of the Top 100 and is currently ranked at No. 105.

The Top 10 list is dominated by Mainland Chinese universities (4), followed by Hong Kong (3), Singapore (2), and Japan (1). According to the rankings, Tsinghua University is Asia’s No. 1 tertiary educational institute.

This year, 669 universities are ranked, and 31 countries/regions are represented, from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east. The Times Higher Education’s Asia university rankings use the same performance indicators as its world university rankings: teachingresearchcitationsinternational outlook, and industry income. However, the weightings are specially recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions.

Earlier this year, four Hong Kong institutes were named in the Times Higher Education list of most international universities in the world for 2023. In addition, five universities from the SAR made it to this year’s Top 100 institutes.
