Kai Tak Sports Park — a multi-purpose complex standing on the northern tarmac of Hong Kong’s former airport — will become the city’s largest sports and entertainment venue when it opens its doors to the public next month. The venue will open in phases, starting with the stadium launch on March 1, followed by the rest of the complex being unveiled over the course of next month. The park — which the city’s leader John Lee has said will “become a venue for major mega and sports events” — was completed at the end of 2024 and has already hosted events as trial runs before its official opening.

What is Kai Tak Sports Park?

Occupying 28 hectares of land, the main attraction of Kai Tak Sports Park is the 50,000-capacity Main Stadium, which features a retractable roof to allow for events come rain or shine. Other facilities include a media centre, conference rooms, and flexible seating that can be customised for specific events. In addition to the stadium, there is an arena for indoor sports that can hold 10,000 people and a youth sports ground that will be open to the public for jogging and other activities.

Furthermore, the park wouldn’t be a Hong Kong landmark without a shopping mall. Officially opened in December 2024, the Kai Tak Mall covers more than 700,000 square feet across three buildings, offering visitors a range of options, including sports academies, Hong Kong’s favourite shops and brands, dining and leisure experiences. It is connected to the park by a 700-metre Sports Avenue. Keeping in line with the sports theme, the mall also features about 30-world renowned sports brands, a 40-lane bowling centre, and the Joypolis Sports Indoor Sportainment Park that covers nearly 30,000 square feet.

What events will Kai Tak Sports Park host?

The first major event that the new park will host is the World Grand Prix 2025 — a historic snooker tournament where the world’s top 32 snooker players will compete from March 4-9. And this year, the brand-new stadium will host the 2025 Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, an annual highlight on the city’s calendar that runs from March 28-30.

But Kai Tak is not just about sports — it is also designed to host entertainment events: British rockers Coldplay will play at the main stadium in April. The King of Mandopop Jay Chou and local star Nicolas Tse are also scheduled to perform at the venue in the first half of 2025.

If you are hungry after all the shopping and sport-related entertainment, the mall also features a 20,000 square foot Food Gala centre and many international and popular eateries such as Shabu Days and KAMO. Along the waterfront, you can also find the Dining Cove, where visitors can enjoy contemporary international cuisine while enjoying the views of the harbour.
