Hong Kong International Airport has revealed its expansion plans for its Airport City — a multipurpose hub around the airport that combines aviation services with shopping, entertainment, business, and hospitality. The highlights are Phase 2 of AsiaWorld-Expo, a marina with ancillary facilities, and a fresh food market, among other attractions. These new projects, which aim to promote commercial, tourism and leisure activities, are slated for completion between 2026 and 2031.
The new developments will be located on the Hong Kong Port Island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the bay area between the airport island and Tung Chung. The centrepiece will be the AsiaWorld-Expo Phase 2 that will boast Hong Kong’s largest multipurpose indoor arena with a seating capacity of over 20,000 people, along with more convention and exhibition facilities. There are also plans to make the water resources near the airport island one of the leading yacht tourism destinations in Asia, with the construction of Hong Kong’s biggest marina and ancillary facilities, which will have around 600 berths.
In addition, there will be an array of indoor and outdoor leisure, cultural, and entertainment options along the coastlines of the airport island and the Hong Kong Port Island, along with hotel development and promenades. The plans feature the development of a Jet Fresh Market on the Hong Kong Port Island, building on the SAR’s position as the hub of high-end fresh foods from around the world. A new sportainment complex that will combine novel indoor and outdoor sports concepts for adventure, exploration, sports and entertainment is also set to open on the island.
Airport City was first unveiled in 2019 and currently includes a hotel and three Grade-A office towers. The 11 SKIES entertainment hub, which will house the first KidZania in Greater China and the city’s first virtual deep-dive aquarium — will open in phases from the second half of 2025.
