These clubs are “members only” and quite popular in Hong Kong for those who are into expanding their business network and/or having a more intimate place to relax and entertain.

Most common services include dining options, sport centers with various types of options depending on the club, amusements for the little ones in some, and networking opportunities in most.

There are rules set by each club and criteria to be admitted that tcan be based on social, professional, or recreational interests. Many clubs also propose different types of membership, whether for individuals or businesses. Many private clubs in Hong Kong also have waiting lists, depending on their popularity.

How to choose the right private club?

To choose the right private club, besides the fact that some of your friends might influence your choice, there are some key aspects to take into consideration:

  • Location: If you’re trying to really maximize the value of a club membership, location is critical. The more convenient the location, the more often you’ll go. There’s no point spending a lot of money on joining fees, and monthly fees if you aren’t able to make use of the club facilities.
  • Interest: You own interests and hobbies will influence your choice. If you’re into boat, then choose a club with a marina. If you’re into sports and want to practice tennis, cricket, rugby, or sailing, then selecting a club with like-minded people and having the opportunity to practice is important.
  • Cost: The membership cost and the monthly fees are huge factors. Some club memberships are more expensive than others.
  • People: Once you join a club, you can expect to make some new friends and extend your network quickly, but it’s always good to go somewhere where there are a few friendly faces. Check to see if your friends are members anywhere.

How to join a private membership club in Hong Kong?

Waiting lists for club memberships are not as long as they used to be and these days, private clubs are trying to attract more members, and there is often flexibility in terms of memberships.

Below are some alternate ways to consider when you want to join a club in Hong Kong:

  • Can’t get in as a 7-day member at the LRC? You can first apply to become a 5-day member. Do this for at least 2-4 years, and then they might accept you as a 7-day member.
  • Can’t get into The American Club as a full member? Consider a reverse membership. The American Club’s reverse membership allows you to use their Central location on weekends and their Tai Tam venue on weekdays.
  • Got some sporting abilities? Another way to get accepted into a club is by becoming a sporting member. If you can demonstrate decent sporting abilities, this should help you secure a membership more quickly.

Remember: At first, you might not be able to secure the exact membership you want. However, once you join a club, be sure to regularly go and show that you are an active participating member. This will enhance your chances of gaining a full club membership.

FAQ

How much do Hong Kong private clubs cost?

The fees listed above should only be taken as a guide as fees are constantly changing. For the most up-to-date fees, please contact the club directly. Also, each club has different membership types.

What are the benefits of joining a club in Hong Kong?

Joining a club in Hong Kong has many benefits, such as meeting new people, enjoying your favourite sport, using the clubhouse facilities, relaxing in a nice environment, and going to social events; many clubs are also family-friendly and great for families.

Do country clubs in Hong Kong check credit?

Private clubs in Hong Kong may require you to agree to a credit and background check. These checks would be done to ensure you are financially able to pay your membership fees every month. The better your credit rating, the more chance you have of being accepted.

What are the benefits for families?

A club membership in Hong Kong offers kids a space to play with friends, including indoor playgrounds for hot days. Many clubs allow guests, so families can enjoy time together. Adults can relax, play sports like tennis, or unwind in saunas. Best of all, Hong Kong clubs cater to everyone, making them ideal for both families and individuals.

Is a club membership in Hong Kong worthy?

If you’re single, without kids, working long hours, and barely finding time to make it out of the office when the sun is up, a club membership may not be a great option.

On the other hand, if you have kids and you’d like a single location for them to do various sporting activities such as swimming, ballet, gymnastics, taekwondo, and other sports with friends in an environment supervised by adults who have been trained in child safety guidelines – then a club membership can be super handy!

Why can I expect subsided pricing within the club?

It’s a different story for each club, but generally, once you’re a club member, you can expect the pricing of F&B consumed within the club to be cheaper than you’ll find elsewhere. The same goes for kids’ lessons; you’ll find you will be hard-pressed to find cheaper or better swimming lessons outside your club.

There’s a simple reason for all of this, you’ve already paid a joining fee, and you’re probably paying monthly fees, so clubs want to incentivize you to come and spend as much time (and money) as possible as the club. Once you become a club member, it certainly makes sense to try to do many activities at the club to enjoy the maximum benefits.
