If you want to take an old-school approach to celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, a date at a drive-in theatre in Hong Kong may be just the thing. Starland Camping is hosting a screening of the classic Hollywood romance Roman Holiday that film buffs can watch from the comfort of their own cars on February 15. The one-night-only event, which is being organised by Gentle Pause, will also give movie-goers the option of camping overnight at the Shui Mei Tsuen location once the show is over.

Ticket prices for drive-in theatre

Take your date or a group of friends to this serene campsite in Hong Kong, which you can get to in your own car or via public transport. Movie tickets are priced from HK$180-HK$1,522, and vary depending on how many people are in one car or whether you just want to book a spot on the grass to watch the movie. Prices exclude handling fees and a HK$20 radio rental charge that’s recommended for electric vehicles without FM radio. There won’t be any food included, so remember to bring your own snacks! The ticket prices are:

  • HK$180: Grass area ticket for 1 person
  • HK$488: 1 car with 1 person
  • HK$936: 1 car with 2 people
  • HK$1,299: 1 car with 3 people
  • HK$1,552: 1 car with 4 people

Roman Holiday is a 1953 romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn in her Oscar-winning role as a princess who escapes her royal duties to explore Rome on her own. She meets an American journalist played by Gregory Peck, who at first befriends her to get an exclusive story. But romance blossoms between the pair as they discover the city together.

Overnight camping package details

Interested in spending a night under starlit skies after the credits roll? You can camp in your car by paying HK$160 to park your vehicle at the campsite. But if you plan to pitch a tent, you can reserve a parking spot for your vehicle for HK$60. The organisers won’t provide tents, sleeping bags, or any other essentials, so you’ll have to come well-equipped for a night amid nature. The site is also open to cats and dogs, for which pawrents have to pay HK$50 per pet.

While Hong Kong hosts an outdoor theatre event called The Grounds every year, the city does not have a regular drive-in theatre. The last such film-screening venue in the city opened in 2007 at West Kowloon in 2007, but it closed after a few months.
