Hong Kong is set to expand its cycling infrastructure with around 60km of new cycle tracks and about 15,000 public bicycle parking spaces planned across major new development areas and new towns over the next five years.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan shared the update in a written reply to the Legislative Council on May 6, saying the aim is to make cycling easier for leisure, recreation and short-distance commuting.
Several waterfront and urban projects are also included. The East Coast Park Precinct in North Point will feature a 680m shared path that connects directly to the existing 2.2km East Coast Boardwalk. Around 50 bicycle parking spaces will be added there in phases from 2027.
In Kai Tak, around 2km of GreenWay sections and 40 public bicycle parking spaces are expected to open progressively over the next five years.
The Government also said future cycling routes in the Northern Metropolis could support daily commuting, while facilities may also take into account electric mobility devices.
This follows the completion of Hong Kong Island’s 13km continuous harbourfront promenade, linking Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan after the final section opened in North Point. The route allows the public to walk, jog and cycle along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island.
