Lai Chi Kok restaurant Very Good Luck Fast Food Shop, which is known for its satay beef noodles, will close on June 1 due to the owner’s ill health, according to a Facebook post.
The restaurant – also known by the abbreviation HHW owing to its Cantonese pronunciation – is one of the most popular establishments in the city for popular comfort food. It features regularly on the Facebook group Satay Beef Noodles Concern Group, with members often saying that it serves up the best bowl in the SAR.
Very Good Luck Fast Food Shop previously closed in February 2021 when its lease expired, but reopened three months later at a new address after it received overwhelming support from the local community. Its current closure is indefinite and there is no word on whether anyone will take over the current owner’s duties.
Several well-known Hong Kong eateries have closed in recent years, but some have made comebacks at different locations or under new ownership. Wan Chai hot spot Happy Cake Shop, which closed in August 2022, reopened in April 2023 in the same district under a new name: Happy Bakery.
Others Hong Kong favourites that closed in 2022 — such as Tai Pak Floating Restaurant and Hoover Cake Shop — are also slated to open their doors again.
