The annual Books For Love @ 10 event at which Hongkongers can buy second-hand books for HK$10 will be held from May 9-12 and May 16-19 at Taikoo Place. In this year’s two-weekend event, there will be more than 320,000 books up for grabs — all donated by residents of the city.
In January this year, organisers behind the annual book drive put out a call asking Hongkongers to drop off their old books at any one of 44 collection points across the city. More than 15,000 pre-loved children’s books were sold for HK$20 during a recently-concluded online sale, but the forthcoming in-person book sale — the 12th edition of the charity drive — will be the high point.
The aim of the charity book event is to reduce waste and spread knowledge and encourage reading in the process. The proceeds from the sale will go towards the Treasure Trove project of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Assocation of Hong Kong and the Agency for Volunteer Services. Last year, more than 250,000 books were collected and over HK$1.1 million was raised. All unsold books are distributed to the organiser’s NGO’s partners.
