A few months ago, I was looking to change my exercise programme. I was bored of doing the same old trips to the gym, uninspired by the classes on offer and in need of a boost in motivation. A friend had recommended that I try Pilates at Flex Studio, so I dived in head first and signed up to their special challenge month, where I went from total novice, to absolute addict in just 20 classes.

Combining classes including Xtend Barre, which has a strong ballet basis, with more intense cardio workouts utilising the reformer machines, the variety of options, plus the expertise of the teachers has transformed me into a Pilates devotee.

The two studios in Wong Chuk Hang and Central are both light, bright, with good changing facilities and a wide selection of classes throughout the day to fit in with your schedule.

Just last month, Flex set another challenge – 15 or 20 Xtend barre classes to be taken within one month. I decided that it was about time to challenge myself again, particularly after attending classes regularly – I was keen to see the results from focusing on just barre classes for a month.

To keep things interesting, each week had a different focus to ensure that each part of the body had particular attention over the month long programme. Incorporating props including the Xtend barre stick to really challenge the core, as well as Pilates rings, bands and weights, the classes were pretty intense, but there’s nothing better than feeling like you’ve worked hard and had a great workout.

The instructors at Flex consistently push your performance, encourage you to work just that little bit harder, while always focusing on doing the exercises right.

I certainly noticed this improved strength and coordination during the Xtend Barre challenge month and since starting at Flex, I’ve managed to rediscover my abs after having my two children, plus feel stronger, more coordinated and with better awareness of what my muscles do, than ever before.

If you have recently had a baby, Pilates can be an excellent way to get back in shape and help those core muscles get back into place. The instructors are experienced and well versed in helping you adapt your workout if you need to take things easy, and will ensure that you don’t push yourself more than you should. There is also the option to have semi private lessons so that you can have your workout tailored for your ability and targets.

So if you are looking to tone up, become more flexible and access varied and interesting workouts, Flex Studio offers something for everyone. In addition to Pilates, they also offer a comprehensive selection of yoga classes plus if you really want to push yourself, then don’t miss out on the brand new Insanity classes – high intensity interval training which delivers amazing results, very quickly.
