Wycombe Abbey School: An Outstanding New Primary School for Hong Kong
One of the hardest and most important decisions a parent will make is where to send their child to school. With many educational institutions to choose from, making the right choice is crucial for children to get a balanced education, and for parents to get peace of mind.
Wycombe Abbey School is bringing its educational excellence to Hong Kong with a new co-educational primary school opening September 2019. The school has a long-standing and proud heritage, founded more than 120 years ago. It is one of the leading independent boarding schools in the UK, ranked number one for academic results at A level in 2018.
“I am delighted that Wycombe Abbey School is coming to the dynamic, culturally vibrant and diverse international city of Hong Kong,” says Howard Tuckett, Founding Headmaster at Wycombe Abbey School.
The new campus in Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island will be equipped to provide an exciting primary school experience. Students will enjoy the best possible educational foundation, with dedicated facilities for Speech and Drama, Music, Art, Science and STEM subjects. The well-rounded education students receive equips them with a firm foundation for success in the years ahead.
The school has a bright future, with plans for development in Greater China, and new schools opening in Hangzhou and Zhuhai. There are also plans to open a secondary school with boarding facilities in 2021 / 2022.
Building Confidence for Life
Wycombe Abbey School provides Hong Kong children of primary school age with an outstanding education during their most crucial formative years. Upon completion, students are prepared for entry into the finest independent secondary schools in the world.
“Our vision is to give many generations of Hong Kong children the opportunity to benefit from a truly exceptional education. This education will draw on the very best teaching practices and traditions of Wycombe Abbey in the UK, a school that is recognised internationally as one of the UK’s finest independent academic schools,” says Howard Tuckett, a highly experienced British Headmaster with more than 35 years of educational leadership.
The school prides itself on providing a learning environment for children aged 5 to 10+, School Years Primary 1 to 6, a time when intellectual curiosity can flourish. The school places strong emphasis on a broad education, with commitment to other important aspects of a child’s school experience —sport, the arts and entrepreneurship.
Ethos and Vision
Preparing children to be confident, happy, responsible, highly skilled and globally mobile is a major focus of Wycombe Abbey School. Its ethos is rooted in a holistic education focusing on the ‘whole’ child, experienced through a longer day for Extra Curricular Activities (ECA).
Children will benefit from a diverse co-curricular programme that will teach them the skills they need to succeed, like creativity, emotional intelligence, teamwork and leadership. They will enjoy learning calligraphy, Chinese opera and other dynamic subjects based on Traditional Chinese ECA.
Homework Clubs for students who want to stay after to do their homework under teacher’s supervision are also available, allowing for a wonderful bonding time with both fellow students and teachers.
Wycombe Abbey provides a bespoke academic curriculum specifically designed for Hong Kong. With a firm grounding in Chinese language and culture, there is a strong emphasis on the teaching of Chinese (Simplified Chinese/Putonghua) to a high standard (same class time allocation for English, Chinese and Maths).
The aim is to help students grow into highly skilled global citizens through a balanced curriculum with Chinese as a core subject, along with English and Maths. Other primary subjects include History, Geography, Physical Education, Drama and Art, taught under a Unique Educational Model combining the best of East and West.
“The bespoke curriculum reflects the cultural, linguistic, geographical and historical significance of Hong Kong, Greater China and the wider region,” explains Headmaster Howard Tuckett. “We will ensure that our pupils have a firm grounding in the Chinese language and culture, with a particular emphasis on the Chinese approach to Maths.”
The school is also highly experienced with the Common Entrance Exam (UK) and strives to help students develop total fluency in English. Students will reap the rewards of a curriculum built around the core components of the internationally renowned National Curriculum for England and excellence in Chinese language and culture.
Children leave Wycombe Abbey happy, confident and well-informed due to an approach to teaching and learning that combines the best from the UK, international and local primary education systems. And parents feel good knowing their child is prepared for the next steps in their future schooling.
But such a big decision brings big questions, so parents are invited to book a school tour or an ‘Explore Meeting’ to find out more. The school tour welcomes prospective parents and pupils to visit the campus during the term to experience the school in operation.
The ‘Explore Meeting’ lets parents discuss their child’s primary education with Headmaster Howard Tuckett in person: “I very much hope that parents will visit the school. I welcome them to schedule a meeting so that we can meet in person to discuss their child’s primary education at our exciting new school.”
