Hong Kong’s Government has announced a 2.2 per cent increase to the Minimum Allowable Wage for foreign domestic workers. From 30 September, all new contracts must offer a monthly wage of at least HK$5,100, up from the current level of HK$4,990 (source).
In September 2024, the wage rose from HK$4,870 to HK$4,990, marking a 2.5 per cent increase. The food allowance, which may be offered instead of free meals, remains unchanged at not less than HK$1,236 per month.
The wage adjustment follows the Government’s regular review of employment terms for domestic workers. Authorities said the decision considered Hong Kong’s economic performance, labour market trends, employer affordability, and the basic living needs of domestic workers.
The new wage requirement applies to all contracts signed on or after 30 September. However, contracts signed on or before 29 September at the current rate of HK$4,990 will still be accepted, provided they are submitted to the Immigration Department by 27 October.
