The Hong Kong government has approved the next stage of the South Island Line (West), formally inviting MTR Corporation to proceed with detailed planning and design for the proposed western corridor on Hong Kong Island.

The South Island Line (West) will be a 7.5-kilometre smart and green mass transit system running between Wong Chuk Hang and HKU. The line will serve eight stations: Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, Tin Wan, Wah Kwai, Wah Fu, Cyberport, Queen Mary Hospital, and HKU, with a depot planned near Cyberport.
Designed mainly as an elevated system with tunnel sections, it aims to improve access for residential areas, medical facilities, and employment hubs across the southern and western districts.
The project follows the earlier development of the South Island Line, which opened in December 2016 and runs from Admiralty through Wong Chuk Hang to the Southern District and Ap Lei Chau. While the two lines are in different parts of the island, both were planned to strengthen north–south connectivity on Hong Kong Island by extending rail access to areas previously not served by the MTR.
Construction is targeted to begin in 2027, with completion expected by 2034.
