Sláinte! A new name has appeared above a wooden doorway on Wyndham Street: The National. Its green-and-gold sign and timber-framed entrance set the tone for a traditional Irish pub, with wooden interiors throughout.

John Nugent and Angel Chiu, the duo behind Peel Street cocktail bar Sugar King, have opened The National, bringing their experience in Central’s bar scene to the new venue.

Pub Classics, From Toasties To Roast Beef

You can make a meal of it rather than stopping in for a drink. The menu includes clam chowder (HK$90) with bacon and potatoes, plus house-cut chips (HK$110) with black garlic aioli and curry sauce. A three-cheese pub toastie (HK$115) comes on sourdough with sweet onion jam.

Larger dishes include beer-battered fish and chips (HK$190), spice bag fried chicken (HK$150) and a roast beef sandwich (HK$340). The rarebit cheese dip (HK$120) contains Guinness, house XO and hot sauce, served with fried tortilla. Pints and Irish coffees are advertised, though drinks prices remain unpublished.

Where To Find The National And Its Opening Hours

You’ll find The National at Shop 3, on the ground floor of The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central. It joins two recent arrivals along the road. Fello, Shelley Tai’s cocktail bar, opened in August at 43–55 Wyndham Street, while 180º Modern Fire Grill brought open-fire cooking to the same building later in the year.

The National offers a more traditional pub menu alongside its drinks. Opening hours list on The National’s official website are Monday to Saturday, from 5pm until midnight.
