Hongkongers have been warned to brace themselves for thunderstorms this weekend and well into next week. The Hong Kong Observatory attributes this unsettled weather to low-pressure conditions over southern China, which will bring cloudy weather, heavy showers, and squally thunderstorms, starting Friday.
The city’s meteorological body issued its first Amber Rainstorm warning of 2024 on Thursday afternoon, which means that it expects rain exceeding 30mm in an hour. In addition, the observatory recorded “violent gusts of around 90 kilometres per hour”.
Temperatures for the week ahead range between lows of 24 degrees Celsius and highs of 31 degrees, with the rain easing off by the end of next week. Humidity levels will not cross 95%, unlike earlier in the year when the city experienced 100% humidity, which was accompanied by reports of damp ceilings and floors from across the territory.
