The Hong Kong Observatory issued its first frost warning of 2024 at 4.30pm on Wednesday evening. Authorities stated that it is likely that there will be frost on high ground or in the northern part of the New Territories on Thursday morning.
Frost occurs when water vapour is deposited on a surface with a temperature of less than 0 degrees Celsius, which usually happens between December and February in Hong Kong, when the weather is the coldest in the territory. The last time the city’s meteorological body issued a frost warning was on December 24, 2023.
However, observatory authorities say that temperatures in Hong Kong’s urban areas will range between 9 degrees and 15 degrees, and could be a few degrees lower in the New Territories. This is higher than on Tuesday night, when the mercury dropped to -2.9 degrees at Tai Mo Shan.
The city’s meteorological body also reported ice formations on building exteriors and plants on the city’s highest peak on Tuesday morning, when temperatures dipped to -2.4 degrees at Tai Mo Shan. The observatory issued its first cold weather warning of the year on Monday morning, which is still in force as of Wednesday evening.
