The Hong Kong Observatory has said that spring in the city will be warmer and drier than usual this year. In its most recent seasonal forecast, the local weather forecaster has said that temperatures from March to May will likely be “normal to above-normal”, and that there will be “normal to below-normal” rainfall levels during this time.
In Hong Kong, average springtime temperatures hover around 23 degrees Celsius, while the territory usually gets between 387mm and 650mm of rain during the season. However, the Hong Kong Observatory recorded highs of 28.5 degrees at its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui on Thursday, and predicts highs of 25 degrees on Saturday.
This appears to be in line with the observatory’s reports, which stated that “spring temperatures in Hong Kong show a significant long-term increasing trend”, and attributed these changes to climate warming. But last month the SAR experienced “close to normal” temperatures, logging a monthly mean temperature of 17.3 degrees — not far off from the normal of 17.1 degrees.
The past few weeks have been particularly humid, with air moisture levels hitting 100% in February, bringing blankets of fog to coastal areas. While visibility levels were affected, especially in Victoria Harbour, Hongkongers were not plagued by damp ceilings and slippery floors like they were in early 2024.
