Super Typhoon Bavi is churning towards the seas east of Taiwan before moving towards China’s Fujian coast this weekend, bringing major disruption across the region.

Satellite imagery from China’s official weather forecaster shows Bavi spans nearly 940,000 sq km (363,000 square miles), around 850 times the size of Hong Kong. The storm has already prompted major airlines to cancel Taiwan flights as authorities prepare for strong winds and heavy rain.

For Hong Kong, Bavi’s impact will be felt through heat rather than wind and rain. Its outer subsiding air is expected to bring generally fine and extremely hot weather to Guangdong, including Hong Kong, on tomorrow and Saturday (July 10 and 11).

Hong Kong Observatory forecasts urban areas are expected to reach around 34°C, while parts of the New Territories could climb much higher. For example, Ta Kwu Ling may reach 36°C, while Sheung Shui and Shek Kong could hit 38°C, making this weekend feel especially intense.
