David Muoka has made history by becoming the first basketball player born and raised in Hong Kong to sign an NBA contract. Muoka revealed the news on Instagram, adding that he will join the Portland Trail Blazers. According to reports, Muoka has signed an Exhibit 10 contract and will likely be assigned to the Blazers’ G League affiliate Rip City Remix in the next season.
Muoka, who stands at 6 feet 11 inches tall, made headlines last year when he became the first Hongkonger to be drafted by the G League, the NBA’s official minor league, after being picked third in the NBA’s development league draft by Capital City Go-Go of Washington. However, the 23-year-old was later acquired by the Long Island Nets in the same league, and played centre position.
Muoka was born to a Nigerian father and British mother, and attended West Island School in Hong Kong. After graduating, he attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. As a member of the 31-team G League, Muoka has the potential to be called up to an NBA team. He also has plans to get an HKSAR passport so that he can represent the city in the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers.
