Hong Kong is set to host its second International Space-Out Competition, during which participants must do nothing but sit still and zone out for 90 minutes. The rules prohibit contestants from sleeping, playing on their phones, chatting, and making big movements, and the winner will get to fly to the next Space-Out Competition at an as-yet-undeclared location.
The 2024 Hong Kong edition of the event will take place at PMQ on October 5, from 3pm-5pm. Anyone interested in participating should fill out an application form by 5pm on September 25. You can enter solo or as a group with a maximum of 3 members, and even dress up in a costume. Those who are selected for the competition will be contacted on September 27. During the event, the organisers will monitor participants’ heart rates, and the person with the most steady heart rate will be declared the winner.
The first Space-Out Competition was founded by artist Woopsyang and was held in Seoul in 2014. The idea behind it was to challenge the notion that being unproductive is a waste of time. Since then, it’s been held in several cities across South Korea, as well as in Beijing, Rotterdam, Taipei, and Tokyo. The last time it came to Hong Kong was in 2016, when 80 people zoned out at AIA Vitality Park over the course of 3 hours.
