Lee Tung Avenue is pulling out all the stops for its Chinese New Year celebrations by putting a new spin on its annual lantern showcase. The retail and restaurant hub in Wan Chai will have more than 800 traditional Chinese lanterns as part of its Lunar New Year display from January 14 to March 5, 2025. The festivities will also feature lion dance performances on the first four days of the Year of the Snake, as well as the return of the Dragon and Lion Dance Spectacular in early February.

Red-and-Gold Lantern Display at Lee Tung Avenue

The Wan Chai hub will usher in the Year of the Snake with a canopy of 800-plus lanterns over its tree-lined avenue, which will include golden lanterns for the first time to symbolise good fortune and liveliness. The lanterns will be lit after sunset, which will make for pretty pics on social media feeds.

Lee Tung Avenue will mark the Chinese Lantern Festival on February 12 and Valentine’s Day on February 14 with 12 four-metre-tall peach blossom trees at its Central Piazza, which will be illuminated in the evenings. Visitors can also head to the large heart-shaped arch for V-Day photo ops.

Dragon and Lion Dance Special Shows

Visitors to Lee Tung Avenue can watch some of the best lion dances in Hong Kong from January 29-February 1, which will be conducted amid the fanfare of drums and gongs. Traditional food will also be distributed to spectators during the performances to amp up the festive atmosphere.

The venue will host its annual Dragon and Lion Dance Spectacular on February 7, the highlight of which will be a majestic golden dragon and five colourful lions. The celebrations will kick off with an eye-dotting ceremony, after which the lion and dragon dance troupe will perform several traditional customs such as a special-edition “plucking the greens” dance, “plum blossom” pole jumping, and stunts on a bamboo stick. The event will end with the golden dragon leading the lions on a procession around the avenue.

Fans of Lee Tung Avenue’s red envelopes can get their hands on a special design that depicts the silhouettes of Lee Tung Avenue and its sea of lanterns. They can redeem one set of eight red envelopes — which are available on a first-come-first-served basis until February 12 — by using 800 loyalty points. In addition, a calligrapher will be stationed at the avenue on January 18 and 25 to create professionally written fai chun, which customers can get by presenting an e-payment slip of any same-day spending at Lee Tung Avenue and following the hub on social media.
