American artist Kurt Perschke’s renowned RedBall Project — the longest-running street artwork project in the world — is coming to Hong Kong for the first time, from December 6-15, 2024. The project consists of a 15-feet-high inflated red ball that will be wedged into 10 different culturally significant spaces on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The list of stops includes Central Pier 10, West Kowloon Cultural District, Blake Pier in Stanley, and Lion’s Point View Pavilion at The Peak.

The RedBall Project kicked off in 2001, and has since taken over popular spots in cities like Paris, Chicago, London, and Tokyo. In April this year, the project went to Tainan in Taiwan, where it was installed at the Tainan Art Museum, Anping Old Fort, and The Spring. Hong Kong will be the 48th stop on the artworks world tour. The 10-day-long moving exhibition will include local artist crossovers, brand collaborations, and event activations so that visitors can spark creativity and imagination.
Perschke was inspired to create the RedBall Project by a space he saw between a concrete bridge and the ground when he was working on an urban site in St. Louis. The artist chooses the cities that will host the 113kg ball by visiting potential sites up to a year in advance and exploring them with a camera, a sketchbook, and a laser meter. The project is usually set up when it’s sunny and where its presence will create an element of surprise.
This isn’t the first time that Hong Kong has hosted a large-scale inflatable exhibition. Last year, Florentjin Hofman’s Rubber Duck Project returned to the city after 10 years and the occasion was marked by two gigantic rubber giants that were anchored in Victoria Harbour. Earlier this year, the world’s first massive floating red heart made an appearance in Hong Kong in time for Valentine’s Day as part of the Chubby Hearts initiative.
