Dubai got to experience a taste of Hong Kong when the Middle Eastern city hosted an event dedicated to one of the 852’s long-cherished customs. The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Challenge 2025 recently took place at Dubai Creek, bringing a taste of the SAR’s rich traditions to the United Arab Emirates. The event, which was organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai, aimed to showcase Hong Kong’s unique culture and heritage.

Dragon Boat Races in Dubai

More than 40 teams participated each day of the competition, which took place on February 8 and 9, 2025. The 1,400 competitors included a team formed by the Dubai Economic and Trade Office, consisting of members of the Hong Kong community living in the UAE. The races not only provided thrilling competition and insights into the Dragon Boat Festival, but also strengthened cultural ties between Hong Kong and Dubai.

Hong Kong culture in the spotlight

In addition to the races, the Dubai Economic and Trade Office set up a promotional booth at the venue to share information about the latest developments in Hong Kong. Visitors could learn about upcoming events, tourist attractions, and the city’s dynamic blend of Eastern and Western cultures. The booth served as a bridge, connecting the people of Dubai with the vibrant spirit of Hong Kong.

Acting Director-General of the Dubai Economic and Trade Office, Leo Poon, highlighted that the Dubai centre has brought dragon boat racing to Dubai for the third year, aiming to share the fun of the sport and strengthen cultural ties between the Asian and Middle Eastern hubs. He also mentioned the upcoming opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong, which will host more international sports and cultural events in a bid to showcase the city’s distinctive allure.

The Dubai Economic and Trade Office also plans to continue organising various events in the member states of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf to deepen exchanges and promote closer cooperation.
