Hong Kong was adjudged the 8th friendliest city in the world, according to a ranking complied by Condé Nast Traveller. The list, which was released as part of the luxury travel magazine’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, saw Singapore take the No. 1 spot, and included other Asian cities like Bangkok (No. 4) and Tokyo (No. 6).
The rankings are based on respondent ratings compiled from April 1-June 30, 2024, which rated cities based on a standard 5-point scale converted to a percentage: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor. The average of these ratings determined the final score based on 4 decimal points, with 2 decimal points being published. Hong Kong received a score of 89.70 for its “warm hospitality”, being a “thriving hotspot for both trade and tourism”, and its plethora of “sophisticated rooftop bars and five-star hotels”.
RANKING | CITY |
1 | Singapore |
2 | Sydney |
3 | Las Vegas |
4 | Bangkok |
5 | Cape Town |
6 | Tokyo |
7 | Marrakech |
8 | Hong Kong |
9 | Chicago |
10 | New York |
In contrast, Singapore’s 94.84 score was put down to the city’s “diverse communities offering the crème de la crème of hospitality”. Bangkok is included in the top 5 on account of its “lively streets” and “colourful markets”, while Tokyo found a place on the list thanks to “the acts of respect and flawless manners which underpin Japanese culture”.
Hong Kong hospitality has featured prominently on recent global rankings, with Rosewood Hong Kong and The Upper House securing top 5 spots on this year’s World’s 50 Best Hotels list, and The Peninsula being crowned Asia’s Leading Heritage Hotel at the 2024 World Travel Awards.
