Hong Kong International Airport was adjudged Asia’s Leading Airport for 2024 at the World Travel Awards announced in Manila earlier this month. HKIA took the top spot for the second consecutive year, beating regional rival Singapore Changi Airport. Other nominees in the category included Incheon Airport, Narita International Airport, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
As of July, the city’s sole airport has handled 30 million passengers in 2024, and passenger volume has doubled to 49.2 million since July 2023. Daily passenger traffic exceeded 170,000 on peak days this July, with figures hitting a post-pandemic high of 173,000 on July 28. In addition, two of Hong Kong’s airline lounges also took home awards. Cathay Pacific’s ‘The Pier, Business’ was deemed this year’s Asia’s Leading Airline Lounge — Business Class, while The Centurion Lounge was crowned the region’s Leading Airport Lounge for 2024.
Kai Tak Cruise Terminal also retained its title as Asia’s Leading Cruise Port, and The Peninsula once again claimed the title of Asia’s Leading Heritage Hotel. The Hong Kong Tourism Board was adjudged Asia’s Leading Tourist Board, an honour the organisation last won in 2018. While Cathay Pacific was in the running for the Asia’s Leading Airline, the award went to Singapore Airlines for the sixth year running.
Every year, The World Travel Awards selects its regional winners from a final shortlist of nominees that includes the previous year’s winner in each category, two runners-up, and other “vetted and approved” entries. After this, the winners are chosen through a voting process that includes qualified executives working in the travel and tourism industry, as well as consumers.
