Hong Kong is set to get cooler this week, with temperatures expected to fall to 22 degrees Celsius this Friday, accompanied by low humidity levels of 35%. The city’s observatory attributes this to “a dry northeast monsoon” that will make the city “slightly cooler in the morning and at night”. Temperatures will drop gradually, with the minimum temperatures ranging from 23-26 degrees until early next week.
The territory’s meteorological body is also tracking a tropical cyclone that is currently east of the Philippines. According to the observatory’s models, the weather system, which is currently a tropical depression, is expected to intensify to typhoon strength by Saturday, when it will be just over 800km from Hong Kong. However, the local weather forecaster said that “there are uncertainties in [the tropical cyclone’s] subsequent movement.”
On Saturday, the observatory also recorded temperatures of 33.7 degrees Celsius at its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui, triggering a Very Hot Weather Warning — the latest such alert recorded in Hong Kong so far. The city experienced a “wet and unseasonable hot September”, despite temperatures dropping to 23 degrees at the end of the month, which the weather forecaster attributed to a weaker than normal northeast monsoon over southern China.
