Hong Kong residents have a new leisure space where they can walk, jog, and cycle on the northern shore of the territory’s main island. The western section of the East Coast Boardwalk, which is beneath the Island Eastern Corridor in North Point, opened to the public on January 26. This 1.1km stretch will connect the East Coast Park Precinct with the North Point Promenade — creating an uninterrupted harbourfront pathway spanning 11km from Kennedy Town to North Point along the northern coastline of Hong Kong Island.

The recently inaugurated section of the Boardwalk spans about 1.1km and uses the 700m space under the Island Eastern Corridor. This is part of the 2.2km Boardwalk, which will eventually connect to Quarry Bay’s Hoi Yu Street when the eastern portion is completed later this year. Once this happens, the Boardwalk will offer a continuous 13km pathway that extends from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan.

The initiative is part of the Harbourfront Commission’s mission to create walking spaces along Victoria Harbour, like Wan Chai’s Water Sports and Recreation Precinct that fully opened in December 2023. This phase was the finishing touch on the Island North promenade that connects Kennedy Town and Fortress Hill over a 9km-long stretch, making it the city’s longest harbourside walkway.

Facilities and accessibility

The Boardwalk is designed as a “harbourfront shared space”, catering to activities such as walking, jogging, and cycling, with a dedicated pedestrian walkway for those seeking a quieter path. Unique features include two moveable bridges — the bascule bridge and the swing bridge — that allow vessels to pass while maintaining accessibility.

The moveable swing bridge is only open from 6am-11pm daily.

Visitors can also enjoy seating areas that are perfect to catch the sunset, a play zone with a wave-inspired design, fitness equipment, and a fishing platform. The revitalised Tong Shui Road Public Pier and expanded open areas provide more leisure options. The Boardwalk is open 24/7 except for the swing bridge, which is only accessible from 6am-11pm every day. Entry points include Tong Shui Road, Provident Garden, and Watson Road.
